Navigating a Need for Certainty.

I’m returning to my 1-minute wonders after far too long, including an extended time away from work due to surgery on my foot.  I’m now mobile again and raring to go!

I’ve noticed myself seeking safety and certainty in everything from journey times to how the world is evolving.   I’ve observed this tendency in others too.  Our current world is giving us everything but certainty, apart from the certainty that nothing in our lives in progressing exactly as we expect.  We consult the internet and even social media to find facts.  We grasp at what we believe to be the safety they provide, to reinforce our belief in the version of the world we cling to.  These facts are, in many cases, false friends.

I have some examples.  Have you ever looked at Google Maps to check the journey time of a trip you make often and know how long it should take?  Have you used the Sat Nav in your car for a journey you know well, but you never know, just in case?   No?  Just me then!  I’ve been wondering about whether we now rely on the availability of facts and data so much that our ability to be flexible and adaptable is seeping away? Are we forgetting how to trust ourselves and our intrinsic abilities?   In these times of global upheaval and climate change, do we hold on tighter to statements or facts to give us an anchor throughout the turbulence?  I’m not sure it always serves me to do that.  Facing a world where our long-held understandings are being challenged is frightening.  For example, we live in a hitherto famously rain-soaked country, now being devastated by wildfires.  We need flexibility and openness to adapt to our new normal.  The certainty we seek is not to be found in searching for validation and holding tight to how things used to be.   I feel that bravery, compassion and an open heart offer the way forward.

If you feel that your world feels un-anchored, believe me, I understand.  If you catch the stress building and you’re a bit stuck, let’s see if Reiki can help your mind to clear and become resourceful again.  If you feel it in your head, give some Indian Head Massage a go.  If you need some “me time” for any reason, do get in touch.  Let’s find a way to navigate through life without always resorting to technology!
